Madness Short 4 - M136

"Disappointing."

date: October 12, 2008

I wouldn't really call it interactive - I mean, it's a short movie with a scene select at the end.

If it's gonna be a choose-your-adventure type thing, then I can only wish you the best of luck. You've got a fair bit of work to go.

I feel your animation was a bit slow - the movement of the bullets and the characters seemed stilted. You could maybe consider your pacing a bit more.

The way the blood 'disappears' looks odd - after shooting out of the guys, it should just come to a stop in some sort of pool. Definitely not 'go back into their head' like it seems to do when the 2 dudes in the 2nd room fall down.

I liked the blood sprays with the dudes in the 2nd room when the bullet hit them. Just redo the ending few frames.

I feel let down by this, but best of luck for future stuff.

Author's Response:

Hey thanks :) What I've taken from your review is increase the frame rate and add more frames in between the movements (which I will do, thanks) and work more on the finishing position of blood! Thanks :)

"Fun"

submission: In my mind

Why does the pre-loader take so long to fade away? And the menu take so long to appear?

I'd suggest making NO transition last more than a second (normally 0.5s is enough for a simple fade) and having the menu one happen automatically rather than waiting for us to mouse-over.

The starting frame wasn't too good - kinda 'scrappily' drawn and not really stylish.

The subsequent scene with the objects in front of a star was probably my favourite part of the movie - changing one element whilst keepingt he rest the same makes for a cool style.

I also loved the way the cloud/sun scene 'popped in' and the last scene - with the dots in the background and the squares in the foreground was cool.

I think you have a good sense of colour but some of your lines seem a tad too sketchy.

The timing is wonderful.

Fun watch, though the slow transitions at the start left a bad taste in my mouth.

Author's Response:

It takes a while because I was trying to set the scene, a nice and slow but spooky scene, I guess it didnt work for you.
Sorry aout the menu.

I am glad you liked the star and changing objects part.

I was trying to cross between stylish and non-stylish drawings, and switch animation styles to show what I can do, thats why some were sketchy and some were not.

Sorry about the transitions.

I think you could totally make a cool movie just with tweens, but not like this!

Give it some music, make it move to a rhythm, make the shape more visually interesting - or perhaps something 'perfect' like a circle or square.

I find it hilarious that you honestly give the Genre.

Author's Response:

I used a circle on my OTHER Clock Day flash! Go view that if youre unsatisfied with the shape here! Yea, I suck at flash. Honestly, I do. So the best I could do in one day was a motion tween!

Thanks for teh review!

Where ISN'T my mind?

"Cool idea, but not visually entrancing."

date: October 9, 2008

It's kinda like 'Play' and 'Flathead Symphony', but using totally abstract things.

Although it's a cool idea, I felt your squares and the fbf ball just weren't as visually interesting as the characters in Dustball's pieces. Even if you want to abstract it, maybe have different things for different pitches and have stuff change a bit more rather than just fading in/out - maybe enlargements...

Also, I was really disappointed with the curtailed ending - when I was just getting into the music.

And why no replay button?

I like the experiment, the bg and the 'clean' style of the black and white with grey. Maybe ditch the fbf and embrace the geometric 'cleanness'?

Author's Response:

I thought I already responded to this. :P

Okay, well I wasn't trying to compare myself to dustball or dan paladin when animating this. :P

I agree that I should've had more variety in this, it would have made it better.

I didn't think of a replay button, sorry about that. ):

I couldn't think of any other way to make the ball look like it would swing unless it was fbf. :P

Thanks for the review.

Madness Regent

"Five minutes of fun."

submission: Madness Regent
date: September 27, 2008

I actually struggled for a minute or two at the glass roof - not realising I had to shoot down. To me, it looked like some sort of portal so I thought I just had to jump into it, then thought maybe I had to press down or another button... only when I 'saw' what it was after coming back to it did it become obvious how to get past.

I feel like maybe having a sign teling us 'you can shoot downwards!' would have made that a bit more njoyable to me - it wasn't a puzzle, just me being dumb, I guess.

The first time I played, I died at the final boss, having accrued a few mistakes by that point - specially in the upwards chase and elevator scene. I completed it on my next go - glad I didn't have to go too far back but feeling that the 2 bosses seemed a bit repetitive.

The final boss specially seemed like it was really forcing us to learn the attacks and hit boxes rather than react or use much skill. And there's nothing to suggest that standing within grasping distance of the hand is a better option than trying to jump over - until we fail or realise that it never actually uses its fingers. I guess that's maybe your love of old-school game mechanics showing through.

I loved the visual signals clearly showing trails for bullets, colours distinguishing friendly fire from enemy fire.

The backgrounds were superb and I specially loved the windows just after breaking though the glass. The touch of blue lighting after the elevator and the lights by the clown, which we could smash also helped make it feel more involved.

Controls were excellent. Whilst we couldn't easily fire in a direction we weren't moving, it wasn't generally a problem and replaying it to run circles around enemies was a joy.

I found the ending - with the explosions and ensuing downward fall - lagged slightly.

Overall though, it was a real joy to play. Short, focusing on the 'five minutes of fun' and then ending before repetition ever has a chance to occur.

Variety throughout, easy to play...

This is what more flash games should be like, rather than spreading themselves to thin or competing with modern console games.

"Got kinda dull."

submission: RWD: 017
date: September 21, 2008

Some nice textures.

I was kinda disappointed by the style of animation though - I felt like the work on the TV and the style of the opening screen looked so much better than the style of the movie itself.

I liked the silhouetted part though, as well as the ending starfield shot and the music was way cool.

I'm glad to see you guys finally starting to make good on your promise of 'spam'.

Your voice sounded kinda odd - if I hadn't seen first-hand what wacky voices you can make, I wouldn't believe it was you.

Kinda amusing in its sillinesss.

"Great fast tempo."

submission: Dailytoon #200
date: September 13, 2008

A fast pace, decent animation, quality voice acting...

The scene with a plane crashing into the farm looked shit and on the scene with the kids up swinging trees, whils the trees were of an impeccable standard, the kids were relatively sloppy.

It's good an excellent tempo though and I like imagining what this film might be like, even if I'd never see it. My favourite parts were the seemingly-irrelevant farm and the ending.

Men's Wearhouse Volume 1

"RTl's part was cool."

date: September 13, 2008

A real mix in quality.

Rtil's sketches were awesome - kinda MSGish with the shading style and loose lines. Mouths sometimes didn't 'fit' though. The dialogue, voice acting and music were brilliant - really adding up to a hilarious whole.

I gotta admit confusion though - I guess this is a real chain in the USA but why all the MSG style and music? Is there some connection?

None of the other toons were really as funny.

However, Taylor's voice for Zimmer was funny and I liked IRG's 'distortion'.

TWEEN: A Flash Odyssey

"Fun and some good animation"

date: September 12, 2008

Some pretty cool work.

I loved the angular drawings of the dude and the animations on the hand. The dramatic skewed shots of the screen and the tween having been produced were brilliant.

The whole idea was pretty cool too.

Maybe the end frame could have had a 'flash player' border around it or the editor timeline moving forwards, to show that the last scene is on the computer? And to fit with the other-on-screen stuff, maybe some colours?

Also, the dude's head when he's about to click doesn't really sem to match his body - too round...

Anyways, twas a fun watch.
