Pico? A+++ for 'exploring a catastrophe' music.

Great dramatic atmosphere.

In my mind, I see... a man. Standing outside his old school. A hand clutches his face. Memories flash into view like lightning. A fire extinguisher. A door. The entrance, now unlocked. The Janitor's closet and the horrible visions of the transsexuals.

Then the music changes and the man runs around naked, dancing with Tricky the Clown.

In all seriousness though, it's a great tune. Loops marvellously, the perfect subtlety of variations, and brilliant melodies.

I'm not entirely sure it's Pico-esque, but it should really be used in some post-apocalyptic RPG mebbe. Or maybe a game where you've just woken up on a trash heap in another planet.

RyeGuyHead responds:

Ok

In imagining a naked janitor dancing with a clown, are you happy now?

Jesus Christ, i need to go take a shower now

Everything is nigh-on perfect bar the looping.

Totally awesome tune!

One major gripe that completely ruins it imo - the disparity in volume between end/start sorta gets annoying when it loops.

Other than that, it's seriously awesome - the hard beats, the sirens, the amount variation whilst you keep that constant tempo and aggressive beat... it's just a shame about that slight issue of the start.

Have the beats at the start and make sure everything else matches up as well, then it'd be nigh on perfect.

EchozAurora responds:

well, that could be easily fixed for anyone that would like to use this in a flash.. I'm always open to requests on things like that, and I never mind customizing a loop or song for an author's purposes.
But yes, thanks for another good review!
This was actually the first battle loop I've ever tried to make, and even with the little flaws, I must say I'm rather proud of it. =]

61s. Some brilliance. But not a good loop.

Wasn't the contest meant to be 60s max? And loop well? (Yours being 61s and the way it 'builds' kinda ruining the loop imo. The loop sounds like a skip or something tbh.)

Also, it doesn't really 'sound' 'Pico-ish' imo.

I really like the melody you've got going on and the beats, the wierd noises... they all conspire to create something that's part music-part soundscape, as all great loops should be imo.

It's an awesome tune and you've got great talents! You should've spent another hour or so on it though and turned it into less of a short tune and more of a loop.

I hate big changes in loops.

I actually enjoy both 'halves' of this tune.

But I really get irritated by the way that the tune switches. When a loop does that, it's sorta bringing real attention to something that, by simply being a loop, is kinda repetitive and should probably sit in the bg.

I love hearing all sorts of variations in start/stop tunes and love subtle variations in a loop. But major variations in a loop just seems like a terrible idea to me.

You've got good stuff going on in both halves, but it just doesn't work as a loop.

SolusLunes responds:

So... no loop, but full song.

I think I see a trend here.

Awesome for low-danger carnage scene bg loop.

I really like how you play around with stereo effects for the drum beats.

The whole thing was a bit slow for a 'battle loop' mebbe. But it'd be cool for a burning scene, or a scene where you're not actually in much (or any) danger but are on a scene of carnage.

Like when Pico's in the corridor in 'Pico's School' mebbe.

Maybe a tad more repetitive than it could be and the time the drums stop for a moment just makes the loop more obvious.

But it's a decent bg loop for a 'safe' carnage scene.

speedmetalmessiah responds:

Thanks for the review Bezman. I was thinking about doing a really fast submission for the battle loop, but figured I'd go with more of a groove type thing. Glad you could still see it put to use for a Pico flash. Thanks again for the review man, I appreciate it.

Not a great loop, but A+++ 'event intro'.

I like the way you have a good amount of variation with the drums in the 2nd 7s.

Not keen on the last 2s or the way it works as a loop.

As a short intro to something, though, like a boss spawning (Cassandra?) or whatever, it'd work brilliantly.

Other minor complaint - I feel you should've varied the volume of the drum beats a bit.

DarKsidE555 responds:

The drums are my major problem but I think with my new prog...thats history for good. Thanks for the review man!

Cool sounds/ideas. Don't like it as a loop though

Love the little blips at 3s. Great bg noises.

Seems a bit repetitive though, with the beats overpowering all the cool bg stuff.

I found it has a sorta hip-hop vibe with the 14s bit. I didn't like the way you had a repetitive thing with a break at one point (I personally feel loops should be constant tempo) but the way you sorta 'swooshed' and reversed that beat... you could mess about and pursue that a bit more maybe? I'd love to hear what you'd come up with if you tried to mess around with your own beats a bit more.

Some cool sounds and ideas but I found it too repetitive as a loop and the 14s thing too much a 'marker'.

Awesome sounds, but I dislike it as a loop.

I personally don't like it when loops have intros/outros, so the fact that this takes 20s to introduce the decent beats, then has them falter at 42s really turns me off.

I like the sounds and when it's going (in the middle) it's really tight. You've got great arranging skills!

And the way the drums come in are pretty damn awesome, with the drum roll, the helicopter-esque noise and everything. Are you a drummer?

Specially in that instant, there's an incredible amount going on.

It's just that I feel that in a loop, the main beats should always be there.

Seamless loop. Great vibe. loopmarker at start.

Something about those particular drum sounds really makes me smile. Not the rhythm - cool but unoriginal and 'obvious'. More the actual drums played and the way the sounds all match up. And it has a certain echoing quality that I really like.

Seamless loop.

The high-pitched note at the start is maybe too much of a 'loop marker' for my tastes - sorta disrupting the flow and getting annoying after a while. If you have variety in a loop, make it more subtle variations.

I love the weird bg noises and the vibe.

Awesome sounds. Seamless loop. Loop markers tho.

Love the soft echoey notes you drop in. I like how you match a sorta uplifting melody to the fast-action beats.

Seamless loop.

I felt it was lacking when played over and over though - the loop's too 'obvious' thanks to what's going on in the foreground. I call the way the simple melody starts/ends 'loop markers'. They're obvious changes that everyone will pick up on, even if it's firmly in the bg of a game and it makes the loop a lot less appealing.

I loved the sounds and everything though.

And it was still fun.
