Not bad

Yeah, reality TV shows are - for the most part - a mind-destroying waste of time.

Your announcer had a good voice and the final quote from the car-owner made me giggle a little - the way excitement is injected somewhere where it just doesn't exist.

I really hate movies that don't have a play button. Add one!

The graphics weren't too bad. I hated your lights though - never have outlines on a light - and the end-screen's a bit sloppy, but the rest's pretty nice.

It was a good idea and I agree with your statement.

Good luck with your next project,
Bez

Tommark responds:

Very Good advice, Thank you.

For a 'novelty flash', this is pretty good.

Some of the speech was a bit hard to understand, but the basic gist of it got me laughing.

It's really a 'novelty' flash, in that it only got me to laugh on first viewing and there's not much reason to watch it again. But still, It does what it does well.

And whilst I could bitch about the slightly poor speech recording or rather limited animation and unexceptional drawings, there's no point in you spending the time to make those things shine in a flash like this.

Besides, I liked some of the details, like the hair flicking over.

The only real complaint I might make is that it ended a bit too suddenly. You can make stuff fade out in flash, you know...

dookiemoole responds:

ha ha really didn't put work into this at all, it was just based on the crazy idea

Nice, but too far zoomed out and limbs flailing.

The movie itself offered little new other than the rather stylised manner in which the stick figure was animated.

Being overly jumpy, too small to properly see his limbs and flailing so fast we couldn't see what he was doing properly, I wasn't that fond of it.

fbf always takes a bit of effort, font used was nice though I didn't like the movement at the start and the music was a good choice.

I note that the final movie still hasn't appeared... :/

Overall, good effort but the style of animation seemed too rough for a movie revolving around the movements of the skater and it really was too small.

Also, some alternate camera angles or a couple of spot effects may have been nice.

On a totally seperate note, it pisses me off when folk say something along the lines of 'don't criticize if you have never made a movie'. I mean, though they may not have made a movie, they are still able to comment on what they liked and disliked about the animation. Are your thoughts on a PS2 game any less valid just because you've never made a PS2 game? It seems to me that how much you've experienced of that form is far more important...

Scribbler responds:

I couldn't agree more with you! You gave a decent score and I appreciate that. It's true that multiple individuals have commented on the "unique" style of animation I used on the stick figure. This was my third animation ever, mind you.

The fact that it was zoomed out was purely because it was a whole lot easier to animate a small stick figure rather than a large one. At the time, I was using the Macromedia Flash MX trial and I was in a hurry to submit movies.

The name involving "PREVIEW" in it isn't really the whole truth. I mean, when I first started, I was really ambitious for this movie but then, as things started progressing, I decided to give up on the full length MOVIE. I have been thinking about redoing these, along with changing the title. The aniamtion would be smoother nad the story would be a little better. I am still pondering on whether I should or not. Different camera angles is a good choice.

Your last comment is very well put and true. I understand why certain people get mad but it shouldn't be directed toward all reviewers who never made a movie.

Thank you so much for your review. I hope that my response is as great as your review was.

Excellent conclusion.

Whilst I doubt that would ever happen, it certainly fits with his projected character, certainly that of the site anyway.

Music fitted perfectly - specially liked the ending piece - and Tom's glee had me chuckling.

The production values could be higher and some graphics could be better, but the story carries itself really and it isn't as if the graphics are actually /bad/.

Great review! Thanks alot!

Top story

I had read it a while ago, but had all but completely forgotten it. Still I'm not sure what it is meant to symbolise, if anything. Maybe an allegory of how beauty can be found anywhere? Maybe a pointer to the many pointless deaths all around us?

Maybe intentionally vague to give us room to think? In any case, Christian-Anderson has done a wonderful job of creating a thought provoking tale.

It was nicely done although maybe not as well recreated as it could be, simply because of the standard of the graphics. However, the beauty of the story remains intact and it was obviously a labour of love.

I liked your eyes very much. The gradients were used really nicely and their over-shiny nature, as if they were constantly on the brink of tears suited the film well.

However, some of the drawings were slightly lacking - specially in the opening scene. I can understand you not animating the whole scene due to time constraints, but maybe a little more time spent on the drawing would have been better. The thing that most irked me was the were the inconsistencies in head shape. Also, some of the early motions (laughing, jingling bell) should have been a bit faster imo.

The stars would have looked better more dispersed throughout the sky and being mcs running for different lengths.

I really liked the font used and the title screen with the bell and such though.

In any case it's a great story, just not as well realised as it could have been.

story 8/10
your 'adaptation' work - 5/10

But you obviously have a lot of talent and potential! Keep at it and stay funky!

I just love reviews from other flash authors. They know how it works and what exactly you can make better in your cartoon. So, your constructive criticism helped me :) It would be a real pleasure for me to get reviews from you in my future flash movies :) And good luck with your website !

Loved the intro.

The intro was possibly my favourite part, along with RyuAnimation's entry, maybe because they were closest to being something interesting other than lines. Specially liked Ryu's wee joke.

Some of the lines were nice though and I did really like the explosions near the start a lot.

It was a nice watch and I applaud you for sorting something like this. Looks like good practise.

Just maybe it seems like it could have tried harder to entertain, with jokes and whatnot.

Maxwell-FA responds:

Thanks for the constructive feedback my main man, stay (SIC)

Amazing work...

Although it doesn't pay off as an enjoyable piece of entertainment really.

I am amazed - taking the audio, you've recreated possibly the best section of that film almost shot for shot. The amount of work it must have taken blows my mind.

The 3d shots, of the sprits spinning round, doing backflips etc. really look amazing and it all impresses.

However, it's just not enjoyable to watch. Essentially, after the initial novelty to it, there's just not much amusement and the 'real thing' is a much better alternative.

You do throw us a few bones, in the form of the 3d 'glitch', the scores (which made me smile) and the bouncing noises. Also, the ending was mildly interesting.

However, it's not worth sitting through all that...

Still, respect for what you've done and the awesome sprites.

Swapp responds:

meh you emailed me this review was actually ment for Super Mario Reloaded

so no beef ^_^

Really laugh-out-loud funny!

Rendering god into a slightly clumsy character, with the lack of knowledge necessary to be surprised by forthcoming events turns this into an amusing animation, allowing us to look upon ourselves from a bystander's position and reflect on the stupidity of humanity.

Whilst you said to not take it too seriously, it does well to reflect on our own insanity, even if it's not all meant to be taken verbatim.

That god would get so frustrated trying to kill us off and then react in such a way encouraged laughter to emerge from my mouth and the ending had me chuckling away.

Sound was brilliant - fitted everything really well! You really are talented and multi-skilled!

The presentation and the biblical references suit it wonderfully.

The art wasn't amazing but had a nice humour to it. This was probably the one area in which some real improvement could be made. Not that it was bad - just that it wasn't quite up to the high standard of the story. However, to have done this in 6 days really impresses me and the art didn't lessen my enjoyment I don't think. Just that it's the least brilliant out of the brilliant aspects.

Great movie and I'd reccommend it to everyone.

Btw, your comic on your site doesn't seem to work.

TmsT responds:

What part of "don't take this too seriously" don't you understand? That's MY job! Heh, just kidding mate. It's always nice when somebody goes to the trouble of analysing my work. I know about all the "deeper meanings" in it and it's cool that you saw some of them.

The artwork was all drawn with a mouse. I was going for the "Fast-n-Rough" style which is usually away-with-gettable, in humour.

The comic has probably got its G**cities bandwidth maxxed out again...
