somehow make me

++ Pleasant song.

+++ Amusing ending.

++ Good choice of character for the narration.

--- Why're the other folk in the courtroom moving lips when not saying anything?

???--- Cutting the gifs in photoshop would have given better graphics.

-- Edges of characters badly aligned.

!!!!-- no play/replay buttons. Starts automatically.

Not great at all, but it did somehow make me smile. Sometimes, that's all that matters.

MrBigStick responds:

because the fatso with the topknot was still talking, they were just agreeing with him on the fact that the woman he met at the park was beautiful.

i don't have photoshop anymore, thought i didn't need it when macromedia and adobe did the fusion dance for flash 8.

no play or replay buttons because this was made for a collab and was just gonna be plopped into a scene after a preloader with a button to go to that scene with the words MRBISTICK-syphilis.swf like it's a legal file or something. but that didn't turn out so i just submitted it to NG as is.

somewhat unsatisfying

--- text in pre-loader is hard to read against whiter parts of gradients.

++ Some sumptuous script fonts.

--- Jazz is battling against Kia/Dante, contrary to what the bios suggested.

++ Pumping machinery is a great spot effect.

+++ Lovely lighting on characters.

++ Great, clean, fairly stylish, vectors for characters.

----- Only one mouth shape for characters. They look like muppets!

--- Some elements look slightly disjointed, like the bubble that emerge or the characters' movement. (The latter mostly looks OK, apart from in a couple of scenes.)

==
Overall, I found the movie somewhat unsatisfying in its plot.

The art was generally sweet on the eye though.

JazLyte responds:

Jazz isn't battling against Kia and Dante, he's fighting Kain, man. Pay attention

funny, but visually

Took me 2 watches to realise that they were decrying each others' beliefs in their 2nd speech scene.

++++ Intriguing metaphor.

++++ Apt that neither was right.

++++ Sumptuous graphics. Clean, flawless lines. Nice use of exclusive black for foreground. Great backgrounds colours to contrast and co-exist.

--- The script font is awfully jagged. It looks like you took a bitmap font and traced it, but didn't bother cleaning. Very rough-looking.

-- music loop got a tad annoying.

??? Maybe you could have made the 2 rabbit gangs different colours, to help us remember which is which on first viewing.

==
Great movie. Not funny, but visually sumptuous and also thought-provoking.

Illumatie responds:

Thanx for the feedback (and sorry for the late response).

The font used in the animation was supposed to be like that, and personally I liked it, but using a good font that fits the style I thing is always a dificult task.

I'll keep the different collored rabbits in mind. thanx for the tip.

recreating realism

+++ 'anxious' looking play button.

+++ Lovely macabre font for 'sleepless nights' before intro, 'dont sleep' in middle and also after ending.

---- Figure drawn in 'intro' looked rather unrealistic and rough

++ Crumpled paper provides interesting texture.

+++ Some lovely simple vector shapes. Specially the cartoon figures in segment 1, but also tentacles and 'blood' from dummy in segment 2.

--- Mouth and licking tongue also rough-looking

+++ effective use of masks.

++++ Great matching of visuals to music mood and tempo

--- No replay button.

??? Maybe in the end screen, have the eyeballs just visible, having rolled up to the top. So it's more obvious she's dead and you haven't just forgotten to draw the pupils and irises.

??? Maybe for intro/ending, a no-outline style could have worked better.

After a shaky intro, I really enjoyed the movie.

In the middle, I thought it was gonna end, but woah!

Your work seems best when you're not worried about recreating realism. Some movements, vectors, effects and textures are visually arresting and some sections seem flawlessly executed.

Shame that the start/end contains the worst graphics.

notorious responds:

Thanks for the good review. I'll be sure to improve on a lot of the bad stuff you said in my future animations!

impressed by the end

+++ Some great expressions. I like the furtive glance.

+++ Interesting scenario. That the dude wouldn't want to...

-- Nearly non-existent lip-synch.

--- Conclusion was rather weak and unsatisfying. If it was an advertisment, maybe give some examples of crazy things you could do with time travel? Maybe you could have shown his adventure?

==
Smiled for most of it, but I just wasn't too impressed by the end.

esspat responds:

are you kidding? my lipsync was awesome!

has me

+++ Great voices.

++ Start (superman) made me chuckle.

++ I like the style of the comic intro.

+++ Amusing bios.

-- Though for static pictures, why no colour? You could have sweet bitmaps...

--- In flashback, baby's body size/shape keeps changing.

--- Loads of misspellings in character bios/subtitles. Worst is 'nefew' (should be 'nephew').

-- If we start the movie with the scene select, the music never ends.

==
Seems kinda like UVS with original characters. Much preferring this, with its lighthearted tone. Made me chuckle and has me vaguely interested in the characters.

Jonimator responds:

Yeah i like The Intro too, for the third though it's gonna be a bit different. I noticed the scene select quite a while ago actually but i was just lazy. |:)

This is actually based on my comics my friend and i made and came way before UVS. Anyway glad you liked it..

ork that wen

+++ Plenty of interesting, well-written info.

++ Great tunes during menus/extras.

- though they could loop better.

-- On pages 4,5,6 of the 'canon, continuity and beyond' section, text is extremely hard to read on the left. You dimmed the white on page 3, but not subsequently!

- Text is kinda hard to read. Justified or left-aligned text would work better than centred. Maybe a lighter, smaller font for the book?

- In bio of Rick, surely 2nd paragraph should all be in past tense? Confuses.

+++ Great drawings. Looks just like the pro thing from some screens! Specially the vehicles and ships, which are flawless throughout.

+++ Great voice-acting. They sound as they should (age, microphoned...) and acting's good too.

---- Terrible lip-synching.

-- I couldn't understand voices at times. No subtitles.

-- tweened motion for joints looked dodgy.

- Some pixelly edges on some things.

Street scene and high scene above city's backgrounds have lovely backgrounds. Did you really draw everything in here yourself?

==
I'm astounded by the amount of work that went into this. You obviously love the series and it's a great tribute.

Read all the text apart from one or two sections, watched the movie twice. But a lot of it was overly confusing for me and I was struggling to keep up. Bios helped though.

Optional subtitles would let me enjoy it a lot more, I think.

By the way, I've got a few original Robotech comics. If you pay for the postage, I'll gladly let you have them in exchange for... a drawing of an elephant.

MedMapGuy responds:

While I appreciate the criticism, you didn't have to give me such a lousy score. It was extremely difficult as it is working on these kinds of films, and with just 2 people on the planet making Robotech stuff, ya shouldn't be too harsh cuz its quite discouraging.

About the problem with lip-synching. A lot of people pointed it out, but I'm really, really confused! I mean, you know that Starcraft series that's so popular right now? The one with the all the 3D effects? (Most recent film was Starcraft Infestation). That film had some pretty, okay fine, bad character art with terrible lip syching, but people never complained. I wonder if there is double standards in this site... :(

I never studied animation, so tweened joints may be the only thing I'll ever do! Arrg!

Lastly, everything was made by me with Photoshop and Flash. As I said, its very time-consuming. And getting a score like 6 is quite painful to the ego.

I tried adding subtitles, but I encountered an error. I really tried. Took me 3 days to decide to omit the subtitles!

Lastly, is that last offer for real?? I'm PMing you as I write this. (That elephant thing though...)

all, it main

+++ Great rain graphics.

+ Nice use of black on walker to attract eye.

--- Ending characters are too sudden a stylistic jump.

-- Couldn't make out Line of observer #1.

++ Free beer reveal made me smile.

==
Overall, it mainly confused. But made me smile.

I think you need to wait longer in between the 3 jokes (beer, boom, watchers) to give each more 'power'.

Soupcat responds:

Hey, you reviewed this one as wel !
Djeez, i love the review request club !
but euh, this....wasn't supposed to get more reviews actually....its my very first animation, and euh, well, i do believe it sucks, but, if it gave you a smile, then i'm happy
Thx for the review ! you really have good arguments and its very constructive, you know what your talking about!
